THE LOWDOWN

 ———————-

Queensland and NSW kids .. you’re heading back to school. I know right? Could you be any more excited? Certainly not as excited as your parents … An announcement yesterday by the Queensland premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk that all Queensland school kids will be back at their desks by May 25 – with kindies, Year Ones, and Years 11 and 12 back from next week – and with the NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian wanting all students back in the classroom by the end of the month – it now leaves only Victorian and Tasmanian kids as the only ones with no timetable to return. “Once our schools are back we can absolutely focus on getting our economy back,” Premier Palaszczuk said, adding that parents are finding it difficult to be balancing working from home with online schooling. Can I get a hallelujah?

**

A man, his five camels and a dog were rescued by Victoria Police on Sunday afternoon, after a camel slid down an embankment at Mt Buller taking the rest with it. The Perth man is on a round-Australia-walking trip with his animal mates. All were rescued and are happily without serious injury. And tell me that’s not the strangest news story you’re going to hear all day.

SPIN THE GLOBE

————————-

Each day we give the world globe a spin and find a news story from wherever it stops – and today we’ve landed in … Spain … where a man has gotten into trouble with the police for taking his goldfish out for a walk. Police in northern Spain issued a fine to a man who they came across sitting on a park bench with a goldfish in a bowl. As in Australia, the residents of Spain have been in strict lockdown because of the coronavirus – which has hit the country so hard, Spaniards have hardly been allowed outdoors. The man tried to claim he was only out and about exercising his pet, like all the dog owners he knew. The police thought his excuse sounded fishy. And that, I promise, is the only Dad joke for this episode…

SPORTS TIME!

——————–

You think you’ve been climbing the walls in lockdown, desperate to get out and be active? That’s nothing compared to some of the world’s best pole vaulters, who have taken their love of competition to exciting new heights. In their very own backyards. French pole vaulting champ, Renaud Lavillenie challenged Swedish vaulter, Armand Duplantis and American Sam Kendricks to a pole-vaulting competition in their respective gardens. Each vaulter had fifteen minutes to complete as many 15-metre vaults as possible. The winner? It was a France and Sweden tie with 36 jumps each. There’s a link to a great little video in today’s episode notes. And it should go without saying: do not try this at home. Using your mum’s broomstick and a couple of cushions off the sofa is not going to end well. Trust me.

POP CULTURE CORNER

———————————

It’s a match made in pop music heaven … Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber have announced they are joining forces to produce a song to raise money for health workers and their children. And while that’s good – there’s an even better bit. They want you to be a part of the music video. All you have to do is video record yourself dancing to the tune and send it in — being sure of course to check with your folks before sending any photos or videos to anyone at all. The tune is called Stuck With U – and will be released on May 8 – which is this coming Friday. So get dancing already! There’s a link in today’s episode notes to an instrumental version of the song – which is a version of the song without actual singing.

SURVEY

———–

A slight change of programming today …  before we get to The S’quiz, I want to ask a special favour of the adults who are listening.

Squiz Kids is three months old – which is the perfect time to ask all you parents, carers and teachers out there to let us know what you think.

We’ve put together a quick, five minute survey so that we can get your feedback on how you’re using Squiz Kids, and what we can do to improve it. The link to that survey is in today’s episode notes.

THE S’QUIZ

This is the part of the podcast where you get to test how well you’ve been listening …

  2. Which sport did a trio of world champs battle it out in in their backyards?
  3. Name the two pop stars joining forces to raise money for health workers?
